The Rhythms of African Music Foundation (RAMF), an NGO based at Agona Swedru in the Central region, is to embark on a musical tour dubbed “Campaign For Peaceful Elections” throughout the country.
In an interview with Beatwaves at his office in Agona Swedru, Mr. George William Dickson, Executive Director of the organization which is made up of renowned musicians, said the musical tour would focus on rural communities, which have limited access to information on elections.
He said there was the need to educate people against violence before and after the elections.
Over the months RAMF has undertaken various activities including health education on issues of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, maternal and infant mortality and still-birth, Environmental Sanitation and Domestic Violence, he added.
Miss Elizabeth Amoakosa, one of the band leaders, observed that in Africa and especially Ghana it is an undisputable fact that music plays an important role in the lives of people.
“Everyone attaches great importance to music. People are excited whenever music is played. Music has become one of the most effective mediums of transmitting information to the people.
Communities are better informed through music on Political, Economic, Social and Spiritual issues. We think it is in the right direction using music as an intervention,” she noted.
The Administrator of RAMF, Mr. Kofi Mawuli also hinted that the campaign would cover all the regions, focusing on the youth between the ages of 18 and 35.
He added that election was a very big threat to many countries’ development. “Ultimately we need to prevent conflicts.
The conventional method in the media has yielded some appreciable results; however a one-to-one intervention with the people through entertainment with a live band that will pull a large crowd presents a better psychological method and strategy in addressing this issue,” he indicated.
