Whenever hiplife artiste, Obour, makes it his mission to tackle an issue he pursues it relentlessly, using whatever means possible to achieve results.
When he embarked on his Road Safety Campaign in 2004 to help in reducing the rampant accidents on our roads, he was tireless in his efforts.
He became a Road Safety Ambassador, composed a song, made a video which hit very close to home and went on tour all over the country to preach his message. And four years down the line, that campaign has proven to still be very relevant.
These days, Obour has his heart set on a new passion and it is all about empowering the youth. For some months now, people have wondered if he is really running for President’ with his ‘Obour for President message that comes complete with posters and a song.
But Obour has already come out to say that he is not a presidential hopeful and that it is just one aspect of his broader aim of youth empowerment under a campaign called Youth For Presidency.
According to Obour, “Youth For Presidency aims to put young people in the position that they rightfully belong to especially in national issues. It is a direction at the youth to make them aware of their duty even now; that they are responsible for their country and their destiny and that is why they are touted as future leaders because the success or failure of their country depends on them and the decisions they make.”
“There is this notion that one is not wise when one is young and this campaign wants to dispel that idea and stress on the role that the youth can play in nation building.”
Obour seems to be one artiste who seems to be more socially aware than most and to him everything he does is his contribution to his nation.
“Personally, I am a musician who believes that being a famous face does not mean riding in all the fine cars and enjoying life but it is about using one’s status to help effect a change in society and that is what I am doing right now,” he said.
And in recognition of all the hard work and dedication he has displayed especially with his Road Safety Campaign, he was honoured with a Grand Medal award on July 3, at the National Awards Day ceremony.
Obour would love to share his National award with the entire youth base of Ghana.
“I want the youth to share in my joy and I also want it to inspire them to see that if one strives tirelessly in whatever one does without thinking of profit or commercial gain, one would be rewarded.”
There are other projects to be implemented under the Youth For Presidency campaign and one of them is the One Ghana Peace Project. As its name goes, the project is directed at empowering the youth to uphold peace.
“The youth is one body that needs to be at peace if the nation is to become a peaceful place for all of us. It aims at encouraging the youth to come together and live in harmony. It also wants to give young people a mind of their own so that they will not be lured into violence at a call by any ‘big man’ during elections or any other time because they will be responsible for their own actions.
They will be made aware that they will be answerable in the future if they don’t play their cards right in the present.” Music will definitely play a key role in helping to implement this idea and in line with this Obour plans to come out with a song, Youth For Presidency in which he is an aspirant, delivering his manifesto.
For Obour, apart from outlining his goals, the song is meant to serve as an inspiration to the youth to have higher aspirations and not wait till they are old.
Another song, titled My Peaceful Manifesto will have Obuor as President talking to Ghana to maintain peace and unity.
“I will advocate for peace among the youth, I want to make them see that we are all one despite our differences be it religious, ethnic or whatever.”
Just like his Road Safety Campaign, Obour intends to tour all the 10 regions to send his message across. There will also be a four-day event in which some activities like a Peace march, Peace to your Brother or Sister, a float, a peace Christian service and a Peace Moslim service will take place.
The whole campaign will be crowned by a Peace Concert which will feature several artistes.
The “Youth For Presidency” campaign is a partnership between Family Tree Entertainment and Youth Icons.
