The forecourt of the Okuapehene’s palace was last Saturday night the venue for a big bash as Akropong citizens came out in their numbers to embrace one of their own who is aspiring to occupy the highest political office in the land come next January.
Though the organisers of the event had claimed it was a non-partisan bash to honour the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo whose father comes from the place, the atmosphere looked more like an NPP rally with singing, happy supporters sporting party T-shirts and carrying flags.
They were beside themselves with joy when Akufo-Addo arrived at the venue around 8.20pm and the presence of known musicians like Nana Kwame Ampadu, Kwabena Kwabena, Daddy Lumba, Amakye Dede, KK Fosu, George Darko, Kofi Nti, Slim Busterr, Mframa and A Plus fueled the excitement even more.
Traditional elders and other guests were already seated by 4.30pm when everything was supposed to take off. The weather was characteristically cool and there was an obvious sense of expectation among everyone gathered at the palace forecourt.
With soundcheck over and more numbers adding up to the crowd, the only fellow needed around to get the bash on course was the NPP flagbearer.
The several announcements that “he is coming, he will soon be here” were later cutailed by some music from George Darko and his new Ghana Empire, Victory Star and Eno Gyamaa bands.
With time still on hand, the stage was turned over to three radio presenters- Micky Darling from Peace FM and Abatay and Abeiku Santana from Adom FM.
They held their own for a while but few understood why they also invited One Man Supporter, Abraham Boakye, to give a lecture on Globacom, the mobile phone company recently licensed to start operation in Ghana.
Akufo-Addo’s arrival at 8.20pm drew even more people to the event. About an hour later, he was on his feet dancing to Kofi Nti’s popular Rakia song. So also were NPP national chairman Peter Mac Manu, Gloria Akuffo, Yaw Kwakye of Akufo-Addo’s campaign team as well as regional and constituency party officials.
It was a really happy mood for all with Nana Kwame Ampadu standing out as the spokesperson for the musicians present.
He reiterated a prophecy he said he received on January 13 that Akufo-Addo would win the December presidential election and said himself and many other musicians are solidly behind Nana Akufo-Addo to be the next president of this country.
Akuffo-Addo had hosted musicians, actors and other creative artistes in Accra a few months ago and the fervour with which the musicians performed last Saturday seemed like a reciprocation to Akufo-Addo’s earlier geature to them.
It was quite clear as the night wore on that there would be an even bigger bash at the Akropong Palace forecourt if Akufo-Addo wins the presidential election in December.
