Music is definitely one of the
most powerful forces on earth no matter how one wants to look at it. It
took a reality TV show to bring feuding musicians together around the
same desk.
Producers of TV3’s Bands Alive, aired every Friday evening
at 8pm, may not have had it in mind to bring members of the three main
rival factions in Ghana’s music industry together but they’ve in a
sense succeeded in doing just that.
The
controversy and acrimony in the run-up to the Musicians Union of Ghana
(MUSIGA) election was so visible nationwide that the blind person could
see there was tension. Mrs. Diana Hopeson had her fair share of attack
from opposing factions led by the likes of Rex Omar and Mctonto.
In
November last year, a press conference was organised by Mctonto and
Gyedu Blay Ambulley on the day of the election at which a stream of
invective was thrown at the then presidential aspirant of MUSIGA, Diana
Hopeson. She also had her way of throwing mud at her detractors through
the press in her campaign.
Now that the dust has settled, Rex Omar, Diana Hopeson and Mctonto are back on good terms as judges of Bands Alive.
On
the first reality TV show in Ghana to focus on live band music, one
could see Mctonto, Rex and Diana agreeing with each other on one
performance or other. They even refer to each other by name.
If their mannerism is anything to go by, then it may be safe to say the hatchet has been buried.
Mrs.
Diana Hopeson is now the President of MUSIGA, Rex Omar and his team
broke of to form Professional Musicians Association of Ghana (PROMAG)
and it’s not yet clear which of these Associations Mctonto is with.
