The Saakumu Dance Troupe, the resident dance company at the Dagara Music Center at Medie in Accra is embarking on a United States tour between now and March 31.
Led by its Artistic Director and Master Drummer, Bernard Woma, the troupe will visit various universities and major cities in America. The tour is part of the Black History Month Celebrations in February and the Women's History Month Celebration in March. The Saakumu Dance Troupe is an artists founded company driven by a passion for bringing innovative dances and world music to its audiences. The 16-member troupe on the tour, are expected to perform at Ithaca College New York, State University of New York College at Fredonia, Hamline University in Minnesota, Macalester College in Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota, The Suburban World Theatre, Minneapolis and Concordia College in Morehead, Minnesota. Other places the troupe will perform at are, the University of Akron Ohio, Indiana University, University of Tennessee, Shady Hill Elementary Schools in Cambridge Massachusetts, Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as many public schools in the north eastern United States.
Mr Woma said, “this is the beginning of a busy year as the troupe is scheduled to tour Europe, Canada and the United States again in the course of the year.” Mr Woma said Saakumu Dance Troupe was one of the leading traditional dance and music groups in Ghana, and their music and dance was joyful, expressive and highly participatory. Mr Woma said that in addition to collaborating with artistes and presenters of all kinds, "we are committed to building new audiences via cultural exchange and performances.” On the activities of the troupe, he said a major part of its work involved cultural exchange, community outreach and educational programs in schools and colleges.
