THE ANUNYAM Traditional Music and Dance Troupe has over the past few years been making waves in Accra and its surrounding areas with splendid performances of various traditional pieces laced with their own variations.
Led by Nii Afotey Odai, the group has in its repertoire, pieces such as "Adzogbo", "Mandela", "Tigari", "Burundi", "Nokona" and "Adiagba", which they have performed to cheering and enthusiastic audiences.
Anunyam Traditional Music and Dance Troupe has also organised a number of music and dance workshops for students, teachers and lovers of Ghanaian traditional music and dance from various parts of Europe and the United States.
Last month, the group thrilled a multi-racial audience with a scintillating performance at the Alliance Francaise in Accra.
Performing at the popular "Wednesdays at the Paillote" programme, the group sent the audience on a sensuous journey that brought into focus the authenticity of Ghanaian dance forms.
With bodies crafted by the art they have so gracefully mastered, the young Anunyam dancers surprised the audience with raw energy as bodies moved with dexterity and unison.
Refreshing solos revealed the creativity of the artistic director as well as the ability of the dancers to improvise.
Accompanied by loud Ghanaian and other African drums, the dancers, clad in colourful costumes and leather invited members of the audience to join them as the crowd yelled in approval.
Several people jumped onto the dance floor and tried to imitate the gyrating waists of the dancers.
Anunyam Cultural Troupe will soon launch its maiden CD titled, "Krowor" with a powerful concert at the Dutch Hotel in Accra.
Recorded by Kusum Productions, the album is characterised by diverse indigenous Ghanaian rhythms and beats.
