The fame and the popularity of Hiplife icon Castro D’ Destroyer is extending to the neighbouring African countries by the day as he continues to perform from one West African country to another. Just recently the man was in Liberia with VIP during the reopening of Samuel Doe Kayon’s Sports Complex with a first class performance;
Last Friday 30th November 2008, when the third Annual Edition of the Black Music Awards took place at the forecourt of Palais Des Congress De Cotonou, Castro was once again there to establish himself as the real Showstopper by putting up magnificent performances to the tens of thousands of audience who have thronged the Palais to witness the greatest ever open air concert; a prelude to the official awards night that is schedule for the following day.
When the MC announced the presence of Africans 50 Cent, Castro was in the house the enthusiastic fans didn’t wait for his turn to besiege the back stage to catch glimpses of the man they have heard so much about especially after watching his “Toffee” video clip over and over again. The security had a hectic time controlling the crowd and this force the organizers to call him up stage even though it wasn’t his time. And the crowd went mad. There were a few Ghanaians among the huge crowd (most of them student studying French under government scholarship).
Castro did only two of his songs Boneshaker and Toffee even though he was supposed to do one but the pressure from the crowd made the organizers change their stiff stand on this issue. And when he took the floor with Ras Kelly and L^Wayne, it was obvious from the look on the faces of the audience and the way the sang and danced along showed that they were appreciative of what he was given them...me pe nea wo ye noooo.
When he moved to the most popular Ghanaian music in Benin, “Toffee”, it was as if the heavens were going to open, immaculate stage craft and footwork, no wonder some dignitaries found themselves dancing whiles other members of the public found themselves in their seat at the improvised VIP stand. It was purely magic and ecstasy. It was a night to remember and a night not to forgotten.
At the night of the awards, Castro was awarded as the African Best New Act with his “Toffee” album. He is the first ever Ghanaian to nominated for this Award. He beat other nominees from France, Togo, Abidjan, Congo among others. Watch out for the exclusive story from Amess on his return from Benin in the course of the week.
