Recently attacks on musicians have been very rampant. Not long ago 2face Idibia was shot in Lagos upon returning from the MOBO Awards where he picked the best African act. Lucky Dube South Africa’s reggae star was also shot last two weeks after dropping his kids at school.
The event coordinator and public relations officer of E-vents Management and Security Company Limited, Mr. Cephas Kojo Asimadi, has commented on how security is being taken for granted by artistes and managers.
In an interview with him, he said “what most artistes think about is the money they get from performing at shows and not their security. Also it befalls on the manager to ensure that the artiste is safe but most of the time this is neglected. Attacks on artistes could be reduced if necessary measures are taken to ensure their safety to and fro the venue of the program and place of accommodation”, he added.
He further went on to say that what his company has been doing for the past two years is to provide security for events and artistes. Some of the events they have provided security for include the Tigo Experience Tour, Rebuplic Day Beach Jam, Kasapreko/Opeimu Street Carnival, Guiness/Adom Fm Carnival and among others.
He said his outfit employs people and gives them training in crime alert, crowd management, artist escort and security and also military training. He gave an example on how Obrafuor was almost attacked in Techiman during the Tigo Experience Tour simply because the crowd wanted him to perform for a long time after a one hour performance. This situation was however prevented when security men from Events Security Company Limited intervened.
Some of the artistes who have benefited from his security services includes: Castro, Kwaw Kese, and radio presenter Abeiku Santana. He therefore appealed to event organizers, event managers and artistes to be more cautious of their safety so as to reduce the spate at which they are being attacked.
Finally he said; “if security measurers are not put in place we will lose all our artistes due to this growing menace and our music industry will be nothing to write home about”.
