The Akumapa Dance Company has in the past few years been creating waves with numerous performances in Accra and surrounding areas that tend to promote Ghanaian traditional drumming and dance.
Armed with its own variations of traditional dance pieces, the group recently entertained tourists and locals with a magnetic performance in Accra, drawing wild cheers and applause.
With master drummer Nii Adjah Joshua Anang on assorted drums, Akumapa thrilled the crowd with dance pieces such as Fume Fume, Atsiagbekor, Bawa, Nagla, Kete, Kpanlogo and others that were accompanied by frenzied drumming.
The group as well showcased a number of choreographed dance pieces such as Dream, Water Day and Egg of Life, which were accompanied by subtle and swift body movements that are highly descriptive and engaging.
Formed several years ago, Akumapa has participated in a number of multi-cultural festivals in Germany including Tinna Festivals in Hannover, Bremen and Freibourg.
The group has also organized a series of workshops in traditional music and dance for students and teachers alike in various cities and towns in Germany.
Akumapa has performed for highly enthusiastic audiences at Alliance Francaise, the National Theatre, the Centre for National Culture as well as several hotels in Accra. The group is currently working on an album, which would be released in Accra.
