The world-acclaimed South African music legend and cultural activist, Hugh Masekela, will be at the National Theatre for the second time in two months when he tops the bill at a solidarity programme on Darfur on Wednesday, June 27.
Masekela featured at the Golden Jubilee edition of the Ghana Music Awards at the National Theatre last month.
The programme, which starts at 7.00pm, is part of activities and events on peace, human rights and development being organised by a number of rights-based groups to precede the African Union(AU) Summit scheduled for Accra next month.
Performing alongside Masekela on the night are Amandzeba, Gonje, the Sappers International Band and Kofi Anyidoho in a spoken word act.
The programme will also include messages of solidarity from several civil society organisations and State partners and a visual exposition on the situation in Darfur.
Passionately devoted to the renaissance of Africa’s cultural heritage, Masekela has accepted to work with a select group of Africa’s foremost performers and activists to protest against the carnage taking place in Darfur and the suppression of basic freedoms in other parts of the continent including Zimbabwe.
The programmes to precede the AU Summit have been initiated by the Network of African Freedom of Expression Organisations (NAFEO) and the Centre for Research, Education and Development of Rights in Africa (CREDO- Africa).
They are hosted by the Ghana Civil Society Coalition and co-ordinated by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).
