As usual, music in the family stays in the family. Akwasi Opoku (aka Kwaisey Pee) is not an exception.

Born to a legendary artist, Agyeiku, he grew up with Rex Omar as a first cousin.

His life revolved round playing with various bands like Jewel’s Ackah’s Butterfly Six and Nana Tuffour’s Sikadwa Band, playing at gigs in different parts of the country.

Akwasi Opoku took a trip with is father to the United Kingdom in the late 90s and the experiences there made him take music more seriously than before.

Over the past decade, he’s released 3 albums:
‘Krokro Me’ - 2000
‘Akono Yaa’ – 2003
‘Nyane Me’ - 2006

The later Nyane Me, which is a 13-track album features Tic Tac, Kontihene, K K Fosu, Ofori Amponsah and his father, Agyeiku.

This modernized highlife singer, has been likened several times to the maestro, Kojo Antwi and he doesn’t mind.

“I think Kojo Antwi is a great man,” he says. “It’s good that they are comparing me to him. I take it as a compliment.

Who wouldn’t want to be compared to one of the greatest? But at the same time, I would like to be known for me; as Kwaisey Pee.”

From shows in Europe and in the USA, Kwaisey shuttles back and forth Ghana and is currently working on his video.

So when he got the chance to do a voice training session with the ‘Stars of the Future’ contestants, he took it wholeheartedly.

He sees it as a privilege and is enjoying being a part of the programme.

It is an experience that he’s still getting used to and his very first chance to give something back to Ghana.

“I enjoy helping out these young ones out. Seeing new talents come up each day. It’s great.”
