Radio presenting in recent times has taken new dimensions, gone were the days when it used to be mainly news casting which was solely presented in the English language. Ever since the local language was introduced on radio it has known no turning back and regrets.
The Twi dialect has been able to stand firmly on its own as far as radio presenting is concern in Ghana. Majority of the listeners prefer the stations that use the local language. Kudos to Odeefuor formally of Vibe fm for the good job done; that is the introduction of Akuapem Twi on radio which is currently the trend most presenters are traveling on.
One Akuapem brother who has also done very well as far as presenting in Akuapem is concern is Michael Botwe popularly known as Mickey Darling. Mickey who has been in the radio industry for six (6) years now, is also known traditionally as Nana Acheampong Gyekete the “Apasem aka Hene” of Mamfe Akuapem. He was honored with this stool name by the chiefs and elders of the town for his hard work and dedication.
Mickey’s radio carrier commenced from Eastern Fm in Koforidua where he was hosting the drive time program and worked there for a year. He later switched to Radio Mercury and handled the mid morning slot and at other times the lunch and their love touch show in the night.
The way he handled his programs made him very popular and was poached by the management of Goodnews fm to Takoradi where he hosted their drive “Kwantimpon”. There, he worked again for just a year and the then management board of Happy fm also went there to poach him down to Accra.
Mickey became a big fish for Happy Fm; he started by hosting the mid morning, to the lunch and then the after drive. His three years contract with the station expired and so he left Happy fm although they wanted him to stay and renew his contract.
He relocated himself at the station with a vision Peace 104.3 fm the mile 7 based radio station where he was playing at random. With Peace fm apart from their talk show program presenters and host of their midmorning every presenter can be asked to take any slot since they believe all their presenters are equally good.
Currently, he can be heard of in the Ashanti Region during the midmorning program on Hello 102.1fm (a sister station of Peace 104.3 fm) from Monday through to Friday. According to him he is there to help strengthen some strings for the station. To him Peace 104.3 fm is his final destination in radio and him quitting Peace will mean bidding radio presenting farewell.
As the “Apasem aka Hene” he acts as the Public Relations Officer for the town and also the spokes man for the town. Asked about how he is able to combine both he said currently based in Kumasi combining the two becomes very hectic and cumbersome but the chief and elders understands him and he has their support in all that he does for the town.
