Ofori Amponsah may be ahead of the pack when it comes to recording good music, but he certainly has a lot of brush up to do on presenting his music on stage.
His performance on stage during the Ghana Music Awards Festival last weekend proved that he’s not much cop as a performer. It made interesting contrast when the Nigerian musician, D’Banj, performed after Ofori Amponsah (Mr. All For Real).
That Mr. All For real has recorded some first-rate albums in Ghana can’t be disputed. His Emmanuella album won him album of the year. The audience reaction to his lacklustre performance should have prompted him to change the style on stage.
It got worse when the MC, Kwame Sefa Kayi climbed stage to discontinue the act in a ‘nice way’. Ofori stopped in the middle of a line as a result.
Also, the band didn’t help matters as they did a terrible job of playing Ofori Amponsah’s songs the way we know them on compact discs. Most members of the audience we spoke to couldn’t believe the calibre of dancers that mounted stage with Ofori Amponsah.
‘They made the entire show look like a rehearsal session’, says a businessman in the audience. The performance has left some fans of Mr. All For Real uncertain about his career as a performing artist.
Ofori Amponsah swept away four awards in this year’s Ghana Music Awards Festival. Emmanuella, a song that is still on top of many radio chart shows in the country, earned him the Highlife song of the year. Same album won in the Highlife album of the year category.
He as well cuddled the Highlife artist of the year award. It will be recalled Ofori Amponsah swept the board last year with seven awards.
