CULTURAL development in terms of music and dance in the last few decades has been laudable. Progressively, Ghanaian youth these days have accepted a challenge with focus on a broad spectrum of cultural interest.
This trend has led to the formation of humorous cultural dance troupes all over the country. One of these troupes, the Kumasi Kokrokoo Adowa/Kete cultural troupe, formed in Kumasi two decades and half ago has enviably, made a name for themselves influencing tremendously the artistic landscape.
The excellent cultural display of artistic values enhanced in Ghanaian life and experience is receiving national attention and support. Baby-faced Krobo Edusei, leader of the group, at the age of 15 in 1968 showed glimpses as a gifted singer and dancer and sharpened his skills, as he kept interchanging styles of dance forms like Adowa, Kete etc.
This intercharge of dance formations with application of skills finely drove him into adopting an innovative dance form which he christened ‘Nwomkro.’
The dance is folkloric in character and tends to embrace dance, cultural singing and traditional drumming fashioned together in a cohesion.
This dance has become the core of artistic excellence, associated with this cultural troupe for many years and has kept entertaining people on occasions like parties, funerals and social gatherings.
No doubt this group which has a large following evidenced by the turn out of fans at its shows and avalanche of letters extended to it for performances, has ably gone a step further beyond the average line of other cultural groups in the scope of originality and perfect ingenuity.
Obviously the track record of achievements of this group is such an encouraging landmark attracting national attention, focus and respect.
In 1996, the group was invited to participate in the annual Kwabre District festival held at Mampongten, the district capital. Having performed creditably, Krobo and his group were presented with an award as a climax of its meritorious record, having chalked the first function in a competition, receiving gifts including colour TV set, a refrigerator etc.
By an invitation, the troupe featured at the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II’s grand funeral exhibiting its prowess of singing cultural songs particularly Akan dirges and dancing.
