Borax [Kojo Folson]

Biography of Borax [Kojo Folson]

Borax, Ghana Music Awards 2000-2002 winner of Best Instrumental Album, Kojo Folson a.k.a Borax began his musical life from early childhood when he took piano lessons for about five years until the age eleven.

Thereafter he had a brief stint with the clarinet while in public school in Brooklyn, New York. While in High school, he studied theory from the Royal Academy of Music Program.

Borax took up the guitar during the final years in the secondary school and immediately began to realize his natural potential for the instrument. In learning the popular radio songs of the time and playing with the Calvary Road Singers in Ghana, he further opened up his musical tastes by recording and playing with different groups as a university student in Nigeria, at home in Ghana and with the Ouagadougou Band in Burkina Faso.

His professional music career took off eight years ago during which he had established the Arts-D or Guitar School at Abelemkpe, Accra where he has trained over 250 students. Being the busiest guitarist on the Ghanaian music scene for some time now, he has played in so many recording studios as a session musician. Apart from having performed as a guitarist with every major artiste or group, he has been on tours with the Joyful Way Incorporated, Tagoe Sisters, Francis Agyei and Daughters of Glorious Jesus on various occasions in the UK, U.S.A. and Canada.

Borax matured into a musical artiste in his own right way when he recorded his first solo guitar album that was the "African Guitar Collection" in 1997 and followed up with his second, the "Mebo Me Guitar". He then unveiled himself as a performer extraordinaire with some concerts of his own, first at the British Council hall and University of Ghana, Efua Sutherland studio, as well as the Alliance Francaise during the Wednesday evening Pilot sessions, and during the Fete De Musique Celebrations in 1999.He has had more concerts of his own at the Lancaster Gate, and in the Euston hotel, both in London, as well as the Troy Hill Centre, Maryland in the U.S.A. Borax' latest album, "Senkusem" takes the listeners on an instrumental journey through African musical landscapes – from Southern Africa through the Northern, Central, Western and Eastern parts.

Other highlights on the album include what he calls, 'African music from the Diaspora' where he delves into jazz, blues and heavy metal rock music. The most captivating aspect of the album can be found in the sweetness of the melodies and the variety of style employed authoritatively by the artiste. Most importantly, the music reveals and demonstrates Borax' own musical originality; a unique voice on the guitar-from the past into the future; for Africa and beyond; for all nation. For every body out there, this is just the beginning. You can get in touch through the following contacts.

As an Artiste, Borax has performed in the USA, UK and Africa, with artiste like Ron Kenoly, Helon Baylor and Paul peters. Borax has released his third CD album which is a contemporary guitar collection of some of the most popular western and African gospel songs in all type of guitar forms from all over the world titled SENKUSEM. Borax is arguably the best Gospel guitarist in the 21st century. SENKUSEM features typical rock, hip -pop and African & western compositions of very well known Gospel songs. It also has a contemporary form of African Hip - Hop fused with "kasahare" (rap) known as "hip-life" of a popular Ghanaian tune "Daadaa mebo me senku daa". Borax is very clear about the direction of his album. With this album, I wanted to reach the world. "I want people to feel encouragement and passion from this record". Having played the guitar and been involved in musical performances for over 15 years, Borax has a very strong technical & musical experience. Created with an arrow straight to the heart, songs such as “O magnify the Lord”, “Monfa ndaase”, “The Battle belongs to the Lord”, and “All glory, All honour” are power-packed and perfectly display Borax’s instrumental insight and interpretive range.

Borax's experience in the gospel industry stretches well over 20 years. He was one of the early members of the then Joyful way when it was created in Mfantsipim School, then Borax, Acuna and Zagros formed the Sons which also became very popular among Universities in Ghana and Nigeria whiles the Sons were in Nigeria. Borax also became very instrumental with Calvary Road incorporated which later turned into the Harvest International Ministries where he is the current Music Director. His ministry currently stretches far and wide across the world having ministered with some of the world's best Gospel artist as an instrumentalist before launching his first album.
