It has often been stated and accepted universally that music is the food of the soul simply because of its profound and hypnotic effects on the mind and body, and the excitement and emotions that become deeply involved when music is played depending on the mood of the listener.
In years gone by, all was good as far a music was concerned, but in Ghana today, hardly a day passes without being subjected to an unceasing barrage of profane songs.
More often, musicians who have no understanding of the concomitant effects music has on the mind, body and soul, use their songs, laced with vulgar lyrics, to put our senses under constant assault.
Although music is a medium of entertainment, its paramount importance transcends entertainment.
It identifies nationalities, races, communities, and has the power like a weapon, to shape the order in most societies, while the mood of a person or people could be determined by music.
It is therefore imperative that our musicians be made to understand that once they come into the limelight, they become automatic leaders and control a section of the population.
Like preachers or pastors, they have ardent followers and should therefore learn to incorporate decency in their compositions and refrain from the culture of nudity and vulgarity in their quest to dramatise their passion for sex as portrayed in their musical clips and stage performances.
Such an attitude is undoubtedly dangerous in a country where HIV and AIDS are on the increase among the youth, who are most vulnerable and have fallen for negative foreign culture.
As the health sector is grappling with the prevalence of the HIV and AIDS pandemic, our musicians should also do their best to compliment the effort. As a country, we can not deal with the effects and forget the causes. There really must be an order now.
Remember, waste is the rule where disorder reigns and the wastage of today would surely be a drag on tomorrow.
Finally, the power rests with the musicians’ union to inject sanity into the music industry, for a stitch in time saves nine.
