The much-talked about Ghana Music Awards came to a close on quite a high note except for the infamous lights-out and some awards going to some undeserved persons.
People are asserting that Charterhouse is a livewire of Ghanaian entertainment, having 90% of all entertainment programmes under their aegis.
They are responsible for many TV shows including Agoro, Game TV, It takes Two, MasterSports, Rhytms and annual events including Areeba Music Fiesta which features international artistes, the critically acclaimed Ghana Music Awards, Miss Malaika Pageant and Stars of the Future.
One event that has been missing from the roster is the Legends Nite, then referred to as the Spacefon Legend Nite. The concept for the event was laudable, to recognise personalities or groups that have contributed immensely to the entertainment industry.
Reggie Rockstone was the first laureate of the award, taking home an appreciable cash prize among others.
The subsequent edition was shrouded in a little controversy. The organisers may have lost a little focus when they decided to split the awards and give them out to Amakye Dede and Azumah Nelson.
Azumah's nomination triggered some questions as to whether the recognition was originally for personalities in showbusiness or sports. Questions were also raised about whether a proper committee was set up to find a true legend and what criterion was used in choosing the award winner.
After the Amakye Dede/Azumah Nelson joint annexation of the Legend accolade, it's was over four or five years since another Legend Nite was organised.
The no-show from Charterhouse pre-supposes that, the castigations on the very last show compelled them to abandon the show or perhaps the events are now too many for them to handle so they are discarding some of them.
Whatever answer Events Director Theresa Ayoade may come up with, I believe that the Legends Nite was a good event. It feels good to be recognised and appreciated when you do something meaningful which has had an impact on a group of people, and that is the feeling Reggie, Amakye Dede and Azumah had when they were called upon as Legends.
The event gave many of our accomplished entertainers hope that their works and efforts would be appreciated and it encouraged other artistes to strive hard to attain legendary status.
If ever Charterhouse wants to revive the show, which I hope they do, they should stick to awarding legends in the showbiz circles, and in choosing a nominee, the persons lifetstyle, how he or she lived his/her life should also be scrutinised apart from the achievements in entertainment.
