Popular music is so much part of our lives these days that one sometimes shudders to imagine how drab our social lives would have been without the catchy rhythms of genres like jazz, reggae, blues, R&B, rock, and of course, highlife.
There are many strands to that unique, delightful Ghanaian style of music and one needs not be an academic to realise that exploring their roots obviously enhances one’s enjoyment of the music. Digging up the roots is even more amusing when facilitated by someone else.
That’s why we commend the Goethe-Institut for the Made In Germany- A Celebration of Burger Highlife programme. It has managed to pull together musicians and knowledgeable persons for a foray into an aspect of our cherished musical tradition.
The interesting thing about the programme is that it has made room not only for performances but also for lectures and workshops. These have helped to succintly explore the music in question and also expanded general knowledge about the music industry.
Knowledge, in every sphere, is power. It is even more powerful when it equips you with relevant information about aspects of your own culture and allied areas.
Popular music is still growing and sprouting new wings each day. We hope it would be possible, as has been with Burger highlife, to periodically examine something that regales us at all times.
