Since the introduction of rap music in our local languages about ten years ago, hiplife has now become the type of music everybody enjoy dancing with, but refuses to buy tapes or copies of the CD.
Hiplife has discovered several talents with unique style from Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour, Okomfour Kwaade, Lord Kenya, Jay Dee, Ex-Doe, VIP Buk Bak, Chicago, Okyeame Kwame, and Tinny to new rap wizards like Kwaw Kese in different languages.
Apart from Sidney who always make his sales with sparking funny controversies over certain true social issues which most people seem to have ignored, the only controversial hiplife artiste (though GMA describes his song as African Pop) has always remained A-Plus.
At the mention of his artistic name A-Plus, you can hardly guess what type of music he does. His first album “Me sru nsuo” was the first time a young musician of his age ever released a song which openly touched on serious political issues, what some refer has political Twi rap. This sounded very new and almost unbelievable.
With happenings and issues lots of people, including the politicians themselves fear to talk about publicly, this young man brings them to light through his music. He speaks as a concern and patriotic Ghanaian and not to sing praises to any political party. As far as his music carrier is concern he does not belong to any party.
After some time came he came out with “Age gon” which was like a drop of another bomb shell in which he analyzed the campaign promises of the various parties prior the 2004 elections, what president Kuffour achieve with his first term and what Ghanaians expect from his second term of office among others.
Currently the only political rapper in Ghana has released a third one he calls “A letter to parliament”. In this letter which he claim he wrote with so much sadness, the story started from unknown an member of parliament he call honorable Apoofii who stood in the rain to convince the people of his community to vote for him with promises of better life. According to the song the MP refused to even come back to fulfill his promises.
Also in the song he seems not to understand why Ghana is second in the whole with Guinea worm infection, the Akosombo dam is in very bad state, lack of accessible roads, there is no access to portable drinking water and yet all MPs including Hon. Apoofii approved over 20million dollars to be used for a birthday celebration. A special feature is the song president Kuffour sang to the two female MCs at just ended CAF Awards.
The tension in this song cannot be compared to any of his songs. According to A-Plus the first thing anybody who hears this song asks, is whether he has a bodyguard this is something he has always taken for granted. After enjoying barely a week of air play on radio the rapper is already hearing things.
He disclosed that after a few days after the song was released on air he keeps having countless strange calls everyday from unknown people. He said since his first album people do call him to make friends or to advice him but this time he is with such shock as to why this time around some group of people he believes are his fellow Ghanaians have decided to tamper with his life for speaking the truth. “I want to leave a legacy my great grand children will by proud of.
This is my mission and I believe God will never forsake me in everything I do”. A-Plus shares his believe. He welcomes anybody who willingly wants to help him secure his safety.
