The night’s performances kicked with a bubbly rendition of Eternal’s ‘I Wanna be the Only One’ as performed by Omodele, Joan, Mercy, Jerrilyn, Eric and Temitayo.
It was to be the last time that these 6 former members of the Top 10 were to perform on the Idols stage, and they made sure that their performance was unforgettable.
A cool and calm Timi proved that he had learned so much from the Idols experience when he took to the stage and performed what the Judges deemed their favourite of his performances, Michael Bolton’s ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You’.
One would not have realised from his demeanor that this was the last hour of a very long journey for the young man from Bayelsa State as he sailed effortlessly through his act.
After the performance Dan said, “We love your flavour man, smooth and easy.” Nana asked, “Which is more nerve wracking your first audition or this last show?” Timi smiled and Nana added – “I know it’s not easy.” Dede said, “The first time you did this song I said nothing in this world would make you go back [to your previous life].”
The song the Judges thought was Omawumi’s best in the competition was Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’.
The lawyer strutted up and down the stage with more confidence than ever before and the crowd loved it. Dan said, “Omawumi, good job.
I love your energy and the way you attacked this competition in the last couple of weeks.” Nana said, “I know that some are going to say it was luck, destiny…if you ask me, I’d say it was through hard work.” Dede said, “I don’t know what you’re doing wanting to be a lawyer in the courts, this stage belongs to you.”
Present at the Finale as an honourary Judge was Ghanian musician and the ‘Godfather of Hiplife’, Reggie Rockstone. He expressed his enjoyment at both the contestant’s performances saying it was tough at that stage to make out who would be the winner.
For his own favourite-flash-back, Timi chose to sing Lionel Richie’s ‘Stuck on You, Omawumi sang ‘Ekwe’ by Onyeka Onwenu – once again both performers reminded the throngs of people who had gathered to witness the Finale why they were the only two left in the competition.
The crowd was in for another treat as both performers unveiled their very first singles as recording artists - on the Idols stage. Timi sang an upbeat song simply titled, ‘I Love You’ and Omawumi wowed the audience with ‘You Got Me’, which she performed in a lingerie-inspired outfit.
An emotional Dede advised Timi never to forget where he comes from and Nana told Omawumi she has the full package needed for an international star.
Showing that they are true stars, the two finalists shared their spotlight with an important issue – the fight against HIV/AIDS, especially as it affects children. The two filmed a public service announcement for UNICEF this week as 27 May is Nigeria Children’s Day.
The two poplar contestants, Jodie and Uche sang a duet version of ‘You Are Everything’ by Vanessa Williams before the winner was announced.
The two Idols Finalists stood together on the stage – Omawumi in a white dress and Timi in a grey suit. Omawumi told Timi, “I have always loved you - in a Christian way.
We’re both winners.” Timi said, “You are my sister from a different mother so no matter what happens…” The Judges reiterated their sentiments, with DJ Dan Foster saying that he was looking forward to playing their music on the radio as it’s all about record sales.
Mike Majic announced that Timi was the winner to a spontaneous roar from the crowd. Timi sang his single, ‘I Love You’ as he wept with joy.
The rest of the Top 10 joined Timi on stage in an emotionally charged atmosphere that saw 5 months of hard work culminating in the dream of being the Idol for Timi.
By being the first ever West African Idol Timi wins numerous prizes, including a recording contract with Sony BMG.
